I thought I would hear from them Wednesday or Thursday. I thought they would call me right away because the interview was just that good. Tuesday noon I was feeling a bit discouraged so I decided to call James. He said they were working out their schedules and to call him back later or he would call me. I called him back about 4 and left a message. He called me a while later and said they did want the second interview with me!! I asked if the shortlist was 3-4 people, he was like ummmmm and didn't really answer. He then said they all liked me, they are a family and need someone that fits, I replied with I did feel like I fit well with the 3 of them already. He said a couple more things then said to give you any indication you are extremely, extremely shortlisted. That made me VERY excited. I was hoping that meant I was the only real candidate or it was between me and another one. I just hate competing for jobs. I know we all do it when looking but I walk away with a hit to my self-esteem feeling not good enough. Many, many times I have been told it came down to me and another but they had just a bit more accounting experience. My mom keeps telling me what is meant to happen, will happen, but I hate that sentiment. I outright told her that wasn't what I was wanting to hear.
They couldn't fit me in until a week later so I spent the week nervous about the tests. The job is construction site clerk, the person runs the office for highways. It is a camp job, so if the jobs are away from the city they set up camp, bunk trailers, cookhouse, washroom & showers etc. The person would be responsible for payroll, invoicing, coding all the jobs so the accountants can get the billing proper so it is high attention to detail. The job has a lot of components but is fairly repetitive which is good. You get to know what you are doing and can do it well. In 8 weeks at the municipal office I can do everything on my own and it was very complicated too.
On Tuesday I went in for the testing. James was not there. He was in the "highways" office which is a trailer. They all are trailers that can be hauled by semis. They had a box for me of stuff I had to sort into piles by how I thought they would be categorized. I was very relaxed and found it much easier than I thought I would. I even picked out a receipt they didn't expect me to pick out. She used the term "impressed'. The second part was in excel and it was basically a small job, that would be a real job I would have to do. I should have put them in order first to enter them but I didn't. I did find a mistake though, and told her what the mistake was. It was a missing sheet, she laughed and handed it to me. My checks balanced and I did the second one.
The manager just happened to come out of his office when I was done and asked how I did. She said I did very well and in good time too. He then told me that they would have one more meeting about how I did that day, call 1 of my references and told me to pick one. I picked the boss I had now because of how quickly I picked things up but told him he could call any of the 4. He said after that they will write up an offer barring no obstacles and that he didn't foresee any. He said I would hear from them by Friday.
I just wanted to know I got the job, I didn't even care if the offer was ready. This morning (April 8th) was 3 full days and I was driving myself crazy again. I thought something must have been wrong if they didn't contact me yet. Stephen told me yesterday they had called him in the morning so I was on pins and needles waiting the rest of the day. Just before we all went for lunch I sent a nice light email asking if they made a final decision. My email box blew up this afternoon but not from James. I had to go to the bank and I got back about 4:10. I just couldn't take it anymore, I was making myself sick (not hard with my issues right now).
He told me he was just looking for my number. He then said he knew they said they would have an offer by today but..... (and this is where my heart dropped, I thought he was gonna say they decided to go in another direction) they were going to crunch numbers this weekend and would have the offer ready on Monday. I said that's fine, I don't need the offer right now. I just want to know that I have the job so I don't have to wait all weekend. He was like yes, you got the job, we would like you to come in Tuesday morning and we can go over the contract.
Holy crap you guys, I am FINALLY #1. They didn't even interview anyone else for a second interview. That made my ego soar (I knew that on Tuesday). I kind of ran upstairs while still on the phone. I walked into the office dancing!! I danced all over so everyone knew I got the job. They were sooooooo excited for me. I still haven't fully processed it yet. I will process it better once I have the interview. I can finally relax though. Everything has fallen into place..........we were supposed to move here!!! The competition for admin jobs is fierce here. The skills I will learn from this job will be great resume builders. The thing is though that if all goes well I plan on staying with this job for years. I want my "forever job". I am going to recap things in another post for those that want to skip these ones and also to add a few more details.
yay!!! congratulations! :) mum
